New media

New Media
Media is currently taking over the world at the moment and everyone takes in  some sort of media every day whether watching  TV,  reading the newspaper, listening to the radio or even reading a magazine or  on line. Therefore, promoting a  magazine  through  New Media  is very simple; has become a very popular way of advertising/promoting in 2013.

Twitter
Twitter popularity has grown over the last 5 years and has become one of the most commonly used social networking sites with  a range of users from David Cameron to Teens. It's purpose is for you to update on your thoughts and feeling about anything that is relevant at the moment. A magazine account on twitter would be perfect because it allows the followers to know exactly what to expect within the magazine and special offers/money off vouchers could be posted for the followers to use. You could post images of the magazine producers and things that go in with our magazine, by posting photos it can make the followers feel more involved in the magazine. The twitter account name would be put into every issue so it’s easily seen so the account would gain more followers; become more popular.
Facebook
Facebook is extremely popular today. Facebook allows you to create groups and pages for users to like. So, any information posted by the magazine page would go straight onto every person that liked your page’s timeline. Facebook and twitter can become very addictive and time consuming so there is no way that it wouldn't work due to people not seeing the posts. Facebook would make it easier to post photos, possibly some picture that are expected within the magazine and it also it allows other users to post what they think. E.g. commenting, sharing images and posts from my magazine to promote our magazine even more, this will also help our read ship to become wider. Gaining the magazine some free feedback there could be sections such as ‘Who do you want to be interviewed next?’ which  would  help with  getting  my  magazine  to  suit  my  target  audience  really  well.
Smart PhonesThe report shows black circles representing the times you’re currently posting and light-gray circles representing the level of interaction those posts receive. The biggest light-gray circles represent the best times for you to post based on your followers’ engagement. Most people of today own a smart phone  iPhone, Blackberry or an HTC. All of which have access to the internet and allows you to download apps. An app is a great way to promote my magazine. It would be a free app because that way more and more people would download it which would also be available to all smart phones. As I think that is where there is a gap in the market, not all apps are available for all different types of smartphones so it limits who can download it. The app would send a notification to each phone when something very interesting occurs such as a competition; the notification would also remind the user to visit the app and find out what’s to come within the next magazines. Although the app would not have the whole magazine on it, it would definitely have some features and lots of images and information. I will include exciting pull quotes from interviews to wheel the readers into buying the next issue of my magazine.

InstagramThirteen percent of Internet users have Instagram accounts and more than half of the world’s top 100 brands are on Instagram. Your customers and potential customers are there as well. Including hash-tags to do with your magazine and what's involved in the context will help your target audience reach out to you and find out what you're all about. Hashtags
are a way to group ideas, concepts or conversations. They make it easy for people to find others who are posting about topics they’re interested in. By including the appropriate hashtags in your updates, you can effectively reach new people interested in your magazine / company. The key is to use hashtags that not only describe your photos and business, but are also actively searched for and used on Instagram.

Posting at the peak time for your users
As with all social networks, knowing when your community is most likely to engage helps you choose the most effective time to post. IconoSquare has an optimization report that identifies the best times for you to update based on your previous posting history and engagement.engagement metrics

The example above is taken from the Shopify Instagram account. You can see that the best posting times in this particular case are Friday at 9pm and Monday at 9am, surprisingly.

Engaging with competitions for people to repost a particular image to win a tickets free for a gig. This will then be advertising your magazine to their follows what should fit into your target audience. This will gain your magazines account more followers and views.

Location scouting

Before doing my photo-shoot I decided to head up into London to find a perfect unique location that would fit my quirky magazine. I spend a lot of my time up in London so I had a rough idea of some really distinctive locations that would fit in perfectly with my magazine genre. I firstly went up to Shoreditch, whilst looking around I came across loads of street art and mosaic walls. I had never seen something so eye catching and bold before. It was so colourful and something a little different. That is what I wanted my magazine to be ‘different’ it was going to be aimed at a smaller audience and only released monthly so I could afford to print all of my images with a high use of colour on double page spreads. I took a few snaps of my model posing with the street art and different textured wall work. Instantly when I saw the photographs I took I knew this was going to be a great success with my magazine. The photos looked so colourful and crazy; that’s what I wanted and I found it.

Instead of keeping my photo-shoot in the same location I decided I would also take a trip to Camden. I go there regularly so I already knew that it was a funky place to take photographs for my magazine. I actually went into derelict building that was full with graffiti and peoples unwanted rubbish. I came across an old trolley that I decided to use as a prop. It worked really well with my model. I asked Charlotte to get inside the trolley. It made her seem rebellious, fun, young and a confident artist for her music. Camden was also a great location because the whole vibe of placed came out in my photos. We also took photos in the market, I got my model to pose in front of a shop that was selling music records of famous rock artists; it helped reinforce the genre of my magazine and which audience I was particularly aiming my magazine at.

Camden and Shoreditch my two locations

Promotional Methods

Promoting my magazine is one of the best way to make it a huge success if this is done correctly. I have started to think and plan out way to do this the best that will suit my target audience; it has to be appropriate for both genders and also be suitable for a wide age range. The more ways I promote my magazine, the more chance of my readership increasing and becoming more well known.

Bus shelters, Festivals, Social networking and Billboards are all great ways to promote my magazine. When choosing my promotional methods it is important that i choose something what would appeal to my target audience and be suitable for a music magazine.
One of the most popular ways to promote a business or product is on a billboard which will be found in a large city, near shopping centres or busy roads. This will be a very effective way to promote something brand new because they are overly large so they will attract a lot of attention because there and are located in a busy area to gain a lot of attraction. I want to create a very funky, unique and bright billboard as this will stand out from the other well known billboards it will draw the audience into my magazine. The billboard will display important information about my magazine such as the release date, networking sites that we will be using and talking about subscription deals! I will have to keep it in areas where my target audience are mostly likely going to be so i will have my billboard in places Camden, Shoreditch, Oxford St, Westfields shopping centre I decided these where a great choice of location because most of my target audience are out going confident people who enjoy going into central London and browsing shops. Camden is a perfect place because they tend to have a lot of gigs held in the Round house of the Indie/rock genre.

Another promotional method that my magazine will be using is advertisement on the side of a beer box. With a coupon that will give you a half price magazine for the first issue. This is a very effective method as my target audience enjoy drinking in there free time seeing as they are in the social class of A and B they can afford to drink on a regular basic men are associated mainly with beer, but men are 70% of my target audience with females only being 30%. I thought this would be a successful way of promoting my magazine because this beer will be sold in all supermarkets and worldwide. Many people will be able to see this and also with the half price magazine on the first issue this we wheel my audience into buying regularly. By using very vibrant colours and bold overasized fonts it will illustrate to my audience what my magazine is all about.

I personally think the promotional methods chosen for my music magazine will be very effective as they will appear across the country and are most likely to be seen in people's everyday life. When I design these adverts i will include bright colours, oversized bold font, strong pictures that will stand out against the already well known companies and products. It is very important that my advert are a perfect match for my target audience otherwise my magazine will not be a huge sucess.

Equipment

Schools camera
Schools lights
Indesign Software

I have my own Canon SLR so I decided to do my photo shoot myself out of school, from using a high quality camera it makes the photo-shoot much easier as it enabled me to take hundreds of photos at great quality that could simply be look back on so I can select the best images for my magazine. For my photo-shoot outside of school I only used one piece of equipment what was my camera. However I prefer my photo-shoot from outside of school; the images are more unique and fit in my magazines target audience more than my photo-shoot that took place inside of school. However for my photo-shoot inside of school my images came out at a better quality because I used a high professional camera, a white back drop and lights. It took me a few minutes to set my photo-shoot out and to decide where I wanted the lights to be placed to reflect the best lighting and shadow on my model. After uploading my photos from my camera and putting them all together in a folder I singularly went through each individual photo and decided if I thought it was a good image. I had 80 photos to go through in total, so it took some time. I am now creating my magazine on Indesign.

Colour Scheme

After creating both my name and masthead for my music magazine, i decided another key concept for a music magazine is the colour scheme. Magzines will use colour scheme to make there magazine recognizable and attract readers. Throughout my magazine i will use black, white, red and purple. I want my magazine to stand out from the shelve a be a unique indie style. This will appeal strongly to my target audience as they prefer things that are slightly different.

I am most likely to use red and black in my magazine as it connotes darkness and violence what is a big thing involved in my particular genre. Indie music magazines are most stereotypically viewed. For example, in both KERRANG and  NME magazine they use a very similar colour scheme of black, white and red this is a stereotypical colour scheme of indie and rock magazines.

Image Ideas

Using PowerPoint I collected images from a social network Tumblr and also Google. To display to my audience a brief idea of what they will be seeing in my magazine‘GRANITE’. For my photo-shoot I would like to aimed to recreate some of these images. With the way the models are dressed and there funky appearance E.g. coloured hair and rock style fashion sense. These photographs have inspired me for my magazine; they look unique and eye catching and this is something I want my magazine to be seen as by my audience. I think these images are successful because the models and young and fresh faced, with tattoos and piercing. These are things my target audience are interested in.

The first set of images portray a powerfully and unique vibe, this is what
i want my front cover to be like. The body language of the models highlights a confident and lively atmosphere. This is what i want to portray + throughout my magazine. In my photo shoot I want to have a urban/grunge setting in my photo shoots it will be set out in Camden and Shoreditch. I will have graffiti walls in the background, with paint and art work on the walls. This will portray my magazine as a unique style. Rock music is more popular in the male audience, but I have chosen to have female models; I want to enhance how my magazine is unique.

Masthead Designs

This power point displays how all the name ideas I generated. These words are related to the specific genre of music I have chosen, Indie and rock style magazine. I have decided to go with the name GRANITE. This word is short, catchy, simple and meaningful. This type of music genre has a strong heavy sound and beat. It will straight away will give the genre of music to the reader, making them easily recognise what  music magazine it is.
I had the chance to show the different types of font I could use for my Masthead. To get access to these unique and different font, I went on DaFont.com and have a surf on which fonts would be suitable for my magazine. I downloaded over 15 different font, saved them and dragged them into NexusFont. NexusFont was a great application to use to open up all the fonts at the same time. I used the possible colours I will use for my magazine. This task is part of planning my magazine and the first bit is to think of a name, and making a brain storm with ideas of the magazine name I want as well as the type of masthead I want to use can be easy into producing my final product.

Name ideas

I have came up with 7 name ideas to help me choose for my Indie / rock magazine. I thought that these where good choices; they give me a wide varity of different types E.g a acronym, phrase and a compound. In the end i chose the name 'GRANITE' for my magazine because i think it has a unique meaning. Because it's physically a rock, however i am using it to name a rock/inide magazine because it's something strange, quirky and different.

Box out text

Smart, edgy and touched by genius, the London artists newalbum is an absolute triumph from start to finish. And the best part? She's just getting started...

Young's fifth record is absolutely and unarguably the most incredible album of their career. It might also be the greatest record of the last decade. It’s not, however, the work of the artist operating at their absolute peak – that’s yet to come. It’s the work of an artist still growing, still fine-tuning, still learning and still experimenting; a young girl who will not look back on this record as a career high, but the moment she stops being defined by genre and instead became a artist. Think Florence and the machine, think Daughter, think Birdy think Lorde point on, Charlotte young can do what ever she want, sound however she likes and always be herself. She's a idiosyncratic and that's what her fans love about her.

But that;s all for another day, sometime in her stupidly bright future. For now, we should celebrate this record for what it is - 41 minutes and 54 seconds of near perfection. It's the sound we've need to our ears. Let's begin with the details. Twelve track, recorded at Silence & sound recording studio in London, featuring guest appearences from Kings of Leon, The XX and Alt J. It was produced by Mark James and co- producted by Ross Orton, with the magical mixing done by Tchad Blake, who worked on The Killers 2010 breakthrough album 'Day & age'. It's a record about lust, heart breaks, isolation, friendship and just day to day life.

Article for magazine.

Born on August 28, 1986 in Northwood, England, Charlotte Young was raised in a family of writers and performers. She took to music at an early age and created her own band, which she named the red roses. The band met with success beginning in 2010, and became famous a few years later with their debut album, Petals (2012). On the album, Young’s voice can be heard on popular songs such as "Kiss my poison" and "Life without you." In 2012.

Some of Young’s talents came from her father, Edward, an artists and a musician who was himself a musical performer in his 20s. Young’s mother, Jane, a journalist and artist, also influenced her daughter, but in quite a different way. Young said in an article in GRANITE Magazine that a lecture of her mother's impressed her and inspired her to aspire to make music with "some of the big themes—sex, death, love and violence.

Young’s big break came in December 2012. Drunk at the Soho Revue Bar in London, Young cornered host Mary Nash—of the DJ duo Queens of Noise—in the bathroom and sang to her "Something's Got a Hold on Me." A week later, the Queens of Noise invited Young back to open for their club night.

"She belted it out, and I was thinking, 'Oh ... my ... God,'" Nash told The Telegraph in a June 2012 article. "I had literally never heard anyone with such a powerful voice ever. I turned to [DJ partner Tabitha Denholm] and said, 'I have to manage her.'"

The red roses initially consisted of Young, her friend Isabella "White" Summers and a drum kit and ended up becoming a four-piece band by 2011. In 2010, Welch recorded with the band Asworth, which released an album with the earliest version of her song "Happy Slappy"—later renamed "Kiss my poison"—and made a hit. Shortly after the release of the album, Young resigned from Asworth.

After signing up with Nash, Charlotte Young rose to fame. The band released its debut album, Petals, in the United Kingdom in July 2012 and met great success, peaking at No. 1 in the United Kingdom and at No. 2 in Ireland. When it was released for download in the United States several weeks later, the album debuted at No. 17 on the BillboardHeat seekers Album chart.

"Kiss My poison," released as the album's lead single, was featured on a number of film and television series soundtracks. A number of the band's other singles were also used as theme songs or featured in several American television shows, including Grey's Anatomy and So You Think You Can Dance.

The band itself made an appearance in a 2013 episode of Gossip Girl.

An article in The Sunday Times of London called Young the "most popular and most highly acclaimed female singer of the moment: poetic, literate, and hurricane-voiced." It went on to say that Young is "a fabulous artist that is becoming more known each day".

In the midst of writing music for The Roses new album in early 2011, Young was offered the chance to travel to Los Angeles to work with producers and writers of American rock music. Although she was tempted at first, Young changes her mind, saying, "No. No. No. No. No! I can't do that. This is too weird. I can't just suddenly leave behind everything that made Petals,"

Instead, the band made its second studio album Ceremonials, which included tracks by Loving, Tom Odell, James Blake, James Hills and composer White Smith, and was released in October 2013. A video for album track "What this life gave" was released on iTunes as a buzz single and on Young’s VEVO channel on YouTube: It drew 1.5 million views in two days.

Young did a significant amount of touring while writing and recording for Ceremonials, which was released in 2013

In January 2013, Young worked with the singer Daughter on material for her upcoming record, and in July 2013, suffered a vocal injury that caused her to cancel two European festival performances, Young said, "It finally happened, I've lost my voice. Seriously, I felt something snap, it was very frightening."

Music was a big part of Young’s life she loved it. Every second she had on the stage she performed immensely like no was watching. Her voice recovered and in August 2013 Young decided to play gigs in small venues; selling her tickets at extremely affordable prices. Young told GRANITE ‘’I felt awful, I shouldn’t be cancelling on my fans, they’ve spend money to come and see me perform, and I wasn’t even there’’. Currently writing a song with Daughter, Young is very excited about playing at Reading festival in 2014. She can’t wait; she uses to attend the festival herself when she was growing up. Young told GRANITE ‘’When I found out I was performing at Reading I nearly cried, loads of my favourite bands are performing there; I’ll be performing on the same stage. It’s just shocking how far I’ve come this past year’’. My friends and family have been so supportive and it really helps! Without them I don’t think I would’ve been so confident and successful. My mum and father are my two biggest fans and they have helped me the whole way. My father being a musician himself taught me from a young age how to play many different instruments, it was something I enjoyed doing and found it relaxing. I loved learning new things. My Dad is forever telling me that I should be teaching him things now! But there’s not much I can teach to a man that knows it all about music and producing. From a young age, Young started working on the skills for which we know and love her today. From the age of five years she started playing the piano, she wrote her first ballad at the age of 12 years and performed at local open mic nights from the age of 14 years.

However in 2011 Young’s career started to slowly turn into a mess… Her drug and alcohol intake increasingly affected her live performances, as she turned up to several club or TV performances too drunk to complete her set. Her management company suggested she got some help, but rather than take their advice Young dumped the management company and turned the experience into the catchiest song on her new album- “Stubborn never sober”

Young later told The Daily mail newspaper she did go to rehab but did not last long: “I did, for just 25 minutes. I went in and said, ‘Hi’ and tried to explain that I drink because I'm in love and have f****** up the relationship; I cheated on my boyfriend. Then I walked out."

'Stubborn never sober', the first single off the album, hit number seven on the UK charts and won Young her second Ivor Novello award for song writing. The album won album of the year at the MTV Europe Music Awards and Best Indie Vocal Album and Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards. It won numerous awards including Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. NME magazine rated the song as the best of 2012 praising Young e as “mouthy, funny, sultry, and quite possibly crazy". "It's impossible not to be seduced by her originality. Combine it with production by James Black that references four decades worth of rock/indie music without once ripping it off, and you've got the best song of 2012,’’ it raved. Petals was the top-selling album in the UK in 2012 for both over-the-counter and iTunes sales. Several other singles were released from the album and all charted well. In late 2012, Young’s debut album ‘-OH’ was released in the United States, debuting at number 45 on the Billboard charts. Even though Young had a huge problem with drinking in 2012 she decided to seek help. The time was right; she would be fucking up her career otherwise? She couldn’t let this talent slide away. Her parents wouldn’t allow her to either.

Young decided to attend alcoholism counselling and get the help she needed for her drug use to kick start her career again, she needed to focus on creating her new album ‘Pick up them pieces’ that will be released in April 2013. Young told GRANITE ‘I turned into an alcoholic and a heavy cocaine user, nobody was to blame apart from me – I’m trying to get back on track. A slow progress is better than none right? I’m so proud how far I’ve come already’ At least she was honest she’s realising that she had made some mistakes and beginning to get back her normal life style. In the interview we questioned Young on her love life she told us that she was single and not looking for a relationship until she got herself better and decided what she wanted to do with her music. However young started doing some small exclusive gigs in her local pubs up in London; she enjoyed performing and especially entertaining and surprising her audience. Imagine if you where just sitting in your local pub and all of a sudden an artist just started to perform? Young told us she enjoyed doing surprise performances because when she was younger she couldn’t always go to festivals and concerts she didn’t always have the money. She wanted all of her fans to feel special and enjoy the night as much as they could. Because she wished this could have happened when she was younger.

In February of 2013 Charlotte Young was officially clean she had been of alcohol and drugs for over 10 months now. Her family and close friends where so pleased of her. She was pleased with herself. Deep down she knew she could do it; she did. All of her songs where written out for the album released in January 2014, most of them where to do with the struggles she had last year.

Her album being released in January 2014 ‘These wars’ was going to be a popular hit, Her last album ‘petals’ was extremely successful peaking at No. 1 in the United Kingdom and at No. 2 in Ireland. When it was released for download in the United States several weeks later, the album debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard Heat seekers Album chart. She was so pleased with how far she had come. She couldn’t thank all of the musicians in her band anymore she claims she wouldn’t have been able to have done it without them. Mary Nash really helped Young become who she is today, from signing her after her drunken performance in Soho. Young just can’t believe how lucky she is. She was over excited about her new album coming out in 2014; she wanted to become more popular and see if she could even do better than last time. Her aim was to become No.1 again in the United Kingdom and also become No.1 in Ireland. She told GRANITE ‘I’m going to have one of my songs released for free on ITunes, it will help promote who I am, what I’m doing and how I sound! More people will by my album then… right?’ It’s great to see that Young has turned her life around and finally got her head screwed on. However something extremely traumatic suddenly happened in Young’s life, December (only a few weeks before ‘These wars’ was being released). Young’s closest friend Isabella White Summer former drummer in the band was involved in an alarming car collision between there motorcycle and a car in London. Summers boyfriend was drunk driving on the way home from a friend’s birthday party, thinking that it was only down the road and that everything would be okay. He was wrong...
Summers was critically injured and a her boyfriend ended up being hospitalized Friday afternoon after their motorcycle collided with a car in East London, police said. The car driver was cited, state police at London station said. Valario Jabobs 24, and his passenger, Isabella 20, were northbound at 3:45AM. When a car turned in front of their motorcycle from a side road, police said. Daniel P. Moffett, 23, of Auburn, was turning left from Brick Hill Road as the two youngster, of London, crashed into his car. Luckily they both survived this serious accident. However summers wouldn’t be able to perform the week of the albums release due to two broken arms and extremely bad injuries.

Young just wanted her friends to get better. ‘It was such a shock, I just want them both to get better and also learn from there silly mistakes. They don’t understand how lucky they are to be alive.Obviously I’m completely devastated that Isabella can’t perform for the albums opening dates, but I guess her health is more important. As long as she gets better is the main thing. But fans don’t worry, we’re still performing on the release dates. We’ll just be using a friend as a drummer!!!’

GRANITE when along to the opening of ‘These war’s’ in January it was held in Camden Round house the day of the album release, Young the only vocalist who formed the band thought it would be a fantastic way to promote the band and brand new album. After their performance she was selling the new album and also doing a CD signing. She was a natural performer and entertainer. She knew exactly how to please her audience and new fans! At the album opening GRANITE interview a few fans to find out their opinions of their band and what they thought of the new album. We spoke to four people two males and two females! It was lovely that we got invited to the opening and also get to speak to the fans and find out everyone’s opinions.

Name: Layla   Age: 18  From: London

‘’The amount of effort and rehearsing Young and her band member have put into this performance and whole night are unbelievable. I wasn’t expecting discounted drink, CD signing, and meeting Young… I mean she’s fabulous. She’s had her ups and downs in life. So have I, so I can relate to her music. I personally prefer ‘These wars’ to ‘Petals’ because all of the songs in it have more emotion, with a mix of heavy rock but also sad slow indie songs. So yeah... I love the new album, I’ve already bought it. I can’t wait to play it when I get home’.

Name: Brad  Age: 26  From: Scotland

‘’Young’s blimmin hot!!! I fuckin love the new album! It’s unique, upsetting but also so catchy. I’ve always been a big follower of her music from when she first started. I’m from Scotland but I’m always traveling to London for concerts and little trips. When Young’s playing I always try to come. She’s such a humble artist and has so much appreciation for how far she has come. She treats her followers like her mates, welcomes everyone and really gets the crowd going mad at her concerts! So I’m fucking chuffed I came to London this weekend!!!! My mates are gonna be going mad that they didn’t come!’’

Name: Lilly  Age:23  From: London

‘’I’ve never heard of Young before, Me and my friends where shopping up in Camden because we live in the area and saw her album release being held tonight so we thought we would go along. I’m a big fan of Indie/rock music myself. All of my house mates love it. So we decided to take a trip down. Straight away I love the whole atmosphere and the people there. The music was catchy and I really enjoyed it, I’ll definitely listen to Young more often now. I actually have purchased her brand new album! I’m surprised because I’ve never buy albums. I normally download all of my music online or just listen to albums and tracks on YouTube. Obviously; I’m a student I don’t have money to spend on all of the latest music. So I’m shocked I bought Young’s. I guess I’ve taken a big liking to her and her fellow band members. But the whole night was really welcoming, I really enjoyed myself. Especially meeting the band and getting my CD signed!!! It was so exciting and I was so lucky. The whole night was constant fun and excitement. I would definitely see Young again. 10 out of 10’’

Name: Daniel  Age:17  From: Ireland

‘’A few of my mates have spoken about Young before and told me that she’s really good, but I’d never heard of her until tonight. She’s done so well, especially not having the original drummer in the band due to her being injured in a car collision. The whole night was fuckin great; I and my mates had a total wicked night! We met some really hot girls, we had free drinks and to top it all off I bought Young’s album and she fucking signed it for me!!! Such a class night.

Last night i met my model for magazine Charlotte. This is the model release form for my photo shoot. I had to make sure that Charlotte was going be confident and unique in my photo shoot; also feel comfortable with being in front of the camera. This release form also states that, if necessary, a re-shoot is needed then the model is happy to take part in it. This illustrates that Charlotte, my model is pleased to take part in my photo shoot and is happy with me using images of her in my magazine. I decided to take three photos one of Charlotte holding the release form, Charlotte about to sign it; then a image of the released form signed.

A model release, known in similar contexts as a liability waiver, is a legal release typically signed by the subject of a photograph granting permission to publish the photograph in one form or another. The legal rights of the signatories in reference to the material is thereafter subject to the allowances and restrictions stated in the release, and also possibly in exchange for compensation paid to the photographed.
Publishing an identifiable photo of a person without a model release signed by that person can result in civil liability for whoever publishes the photograph.
In short, photo journalists almost never need to obtain model releases for images they shoot for (or sell to) news or qualified editorial publications. Photographers who also publish images need releases to protect themselves, but there is a distinction between making an imageavailable for sale (even via a website), which is not considered publication in a form that would require a release, and the use of the same image to promote a product or service in a way that would require a release.

Mood board

I have gathered together a load of images that represent my target audience. Bands and artists that they listen to; shops and places that they go to. I have chosen a famous song by Green Day to play over the images because this is a well known band that my target audience listen to.

Production Diary 5

This weekend I went down to Camden and Shoreditch to do my photo shoot with Charlotte. I decided to pick these locations because they are unique areas with loads of funky paintings and unique shops. Most of my target audience shop in these places, so if they see this as my location it will attract them into buying my magazine. I took many different images at different angles and styles so I had a wide selection of photographs to choose from. The top image is perfect for my double page contents page because Charlottes facial expressions represents a cheeky confident look; most rock artists are very confident. Her clothing is very dark an punk like with the tartan leather coat. However charlottes hair is very messy and unusual. Most rock/indie artists have messy hair or uncut facial hair. The painting of the girl in the background looks like Charlotte as they have similar hair and eyes.

Production Diary 4

Throughout this weeks media lesson I have been going over my coursework and improving things, such as re doing my audience profile because firstly i only looked at one person. Now I have a perfect male and female that are the target audience for my magazine. I also interviewed my friend Gemma and asked her for her opionion on my proposal and uploaded the short video to Youtube. I started thinking of how I want to layout my magazine and found some magazines that I inspire mine to look like. E.g. NME and Kerrang. I went into Tescos today and had a look at all of the magazines and compared the difference in the fonts and how they portray what age and genre there magzagines are aimed at. For example Top of the pops have a very circle and flowing font. This emphasis that this magazine is aimed at a feminine audience. However rock magazines font is very oversized, bold and edgy. This reinforces that this is mainly aimed at the male audience however, some females will also enjoy reading rock magazines. Yesterday I started to collect images for my mood board, and chose a song that I thought fitted in well with my music genre. I chose a song by the The arctic monkeys because there music varies between indie and rock for each song; I think there music fits in well with the style of my magazine.

What do we expect from a music magazine?

What do we expect from a music magazine?
From a music magazine we expect an eye catching and interesting front cover, talking about our favourite artists and bands with a unique image that will attract the reader from that particular audience. This will make us pick up the magazine and have a look inside. From an Indie/rock music lover in a magazine we expect a lot of articles from festivals and images. Interviews with members of the bands and exclusive images that we cannot access online. We expect to be able to subscribe to Indie/rock magazines as their target audience are aimed at an older generation that will more likely be able to afford that sort of thing. In all genres of magazines there will more than likely be a freebie what will attract the audience into buying the magazine even more. E.g. posters in a pop magazine; a free CD in a rock or R&B magazine. In a music magazine we highly expect good quality articles and information because we want to learn and find out new interesting things about our idols. We want to be updated with the latest news and not hear stuff from months ago that we already found out online. The images we see in music magazine are expected to be at a high quality and photographs that we wouldn’t be able to get hold of ourselves. E.g. close ups of Green day playing at Reading and back stage. These would be perfect photos. We would like our magazine to also include there website if they have one, as it will allow us to find out more about the magazine and read new articles and watch videos and play interactive games.

Why do audiences read magazines: what pleasures do they gain from them? What information might they benefit from? Why would they still read a magazine in light of easier (and cheaper) access to similar material on the Internet?
The older generation prefer to read a magazine because its hand held and easier to take around; you can read it on the train and read it in the bath. You don’t need Wi-Fi access so you can constantly be reading it. Some people are not very computer literate so they either find it very difficult or confusing trying to find out the information they are looking for online. However some people prefer reading magazines as they enjoy collecting them weekly/monthly.
Print magazines can be very useful in their own way. The articles that interest you may be longer and more detailed than what you find online, can include lots of images and useful charts. Another nice thing about print magazines is their portability. You do not need a power source or battery to access them and if you accidentally drop them, then no harm done. The information inside a print magazine is going to be serious and realistic but if you’re researching something online you cannot guarantee that it’s going to be 100% true as anyone could have just typed up an article.
How do magazine publishers make money? How are they attempting to retain audiences? What business models are used to ensure a sustained audience? What are some of the magazine’s wider assets – TV, radio, awards, and stages?
Magazine publishers make some of their money from allowing advertisement inside their magazines, that will interest there target audience. E.g. Rock magazine advertising new beer flavours by a certain company; pop magazine advertising a new range of pink eye shadow. They also make money from having a subscription for their audience to have for their magazine. It allows the publishing company to excess money before they have even sold anything to their readers. So they have time to product the magazine with the money that they have paid for subscription. Another way publishers make money is from there audiences buying there magazine. NME are a famous Indie/Rock music magazine however they have been extremely successful, they currently have there own radio station and stage at Reading festival with well known artists performing on it such as Biffy Clyro and Alt J. They also have a app you can download on any apple product that gives you the latest updates on all of the new music and photography. NME have there own music awards that promote new bands but also have famous rock legends performing, such as The Arctic monkeys.

How is your particular genre of music represented? What are the key iconography, Artist, albums, attitudes, ideologies? Indie/rock music is represented in a very aggressive and bold way with mainly the use of the instruments of a either a electric guitar or drums. The artists usually dressed very dark coloured. The males of the genre wear tight black skinny jeans, with over sized black/white t-shits. They are very scruffy and un-clean showing a lot of facial hair and a messy long hair style. The females of the genre are normally dressed in dark clothing also, either wearing a skirt or skinny jeans. The females usually wear heavy eye make-up and dark red lips and tend to care more about there appearance then the males. The shoes worn by both genders are either Vans or Doc martens. However some females tend to wear chunky heeled boots or platforms. The genre accessorise there outfits with leather jackets, metal studded belts, heavy piercings and some of the artists will be covered in tattoos. This conveys there individuality and there confidence to be different. The rock genre is always associated with alcohol and heavy drugs in the need to look 'tough' and 'cool'. The men are very into having a lot of all and are known for smashing up hotel rooms; having a attitude of 'I don't care'. The rock genre is primarily presented through the actual artist or/and band of the genre. The bands within the rock genre are usually extremely unique to one another and portray this both at their live performances and in their music videos. Most rock music videos are actually presented to the audience by a live performance and you will commonly see this with bands such as Guns n' Roses. If you look at the popular rock bands out there, you will see that they all have that unique rock style to them, in which a lot of them will be dressed in dark/indie outfits. Some bands will take it to another level of extreme and radical, such as the popular band Kiss,  who are well know for their outrageous dress style. However this is what being a successful and popular rock band is all about being different.

Feedback from proposal

Audience Survey

I created a survey on 'SurveyMonkey' to help me find out what my target audience would enjoy and like to see inside my music magazine. This helped me get a good idea of how to set out my magazine and a reasonable price. I decided to ask my audience what social networks they used on a regular basis, what one gets the highest favourites I will then create this social networking site because I can advertise my magazine and loads of news and my monthly competition. I decided to create 8 questions that would summarise my magazine the best; I kept them very plain and simple so I didn’t bore my audience easily. One of my questions was ‘How often do you read music magazines’ I done this so I could get a general feel of my target audiences views. However this was a very important question because I needed to find out whether to publish my magazine weekly or monthly; if my magazine was monthly I would have to include a lot more information and time. But if it was weekly I could make my magazine smaller with less information. However I also incorporated more detailed questions such as ‘What social networking sites do you use the most?’ I thought this was a good idea because it portrays that I’m trying to make my magazine fit my target audience perfectly and to make it as successfully as possible. All of my questions used were given multiple choice answers so the participants felted like I wasn’t missing anyone one with a big range of answers.

Production Diary 3

Throughout the weekend I was a extra on 'My mad fat diary' It was a fantastic experience because i was behind all of the scenes and saw what it was like to film a TV show and how much work went into it, for example all the make-up,costumes and props all the time put in to the surroundings to make everything perfect. The make-up artists and hair dressers were constantly going around and making sure every ones make-up and hair was all correct for the show. This made me think about my photo shoot and how much time and effort it takes for a successful shoot. I have planed where i want my photo shoot to take place either Camden or Shoreditch. I decided on these locations because the genre of music i am looking at is indie and these to areas are extremely funky and individual. I am going to have to model one boy and one girl, they will be dressed very fashionably but also different and bold. The female models make-up will be very bold and eyecatching, with either dark plum or red lips and dark eye make-up. This is to go in with the theme of my music magazine because it will be black, white and red.

Preliminary Task and evaluation

This is my Haydon school front cover, I decided to keep the colour scheme very simple and plain as the magazine is aimed at a wide audience varying between 12-18. I Incorporated the school logo into the magazine to display that the magazine is all about Haydon and allows the readers to feel apart of the magazine and the school. I took all of the photos myself either in the canteen or the common room, the layout of my front cover is very modern and welcoming looking. With the neat framing around all images it makes them all stand out, I created this on Indesign this was the first time i used it as previously we used photo shop. I found it difficult at the start but after awhile you gradually get the hang of it. I included the schools website and twitter name in my magazine to advertise the school and allow my readers to keep updated with important information. The price of my magazine is only £1.50. The reason why it's so cheep is because it being sold to student who are at a young age; will not have money of their own.
My contents page is very classy and plain with the constant theme of black white and the school colours, this was also created on Indesign. You can tell i created the contents page first because its standers aren't as good as my front cover page. At the start i found using Indesign rather tricky as i had never used it before, however my work progressed and i found out how to used all of the tools.

To improve my magazine: I would take stronger images that portray the canteen and school better to my audience, because i didn't have enough time to plan my preliminary task I decided to just get on with it and take the photographs on my Iphone instead of a professional camera. I would also download different styles of font of 'dafont' to make my magazine look more professional and appealing to my targer audience. I would also incorperate more yellow and navy throughout my magazine as it fits in with the schools colours.
