New media

New Media
Media is currently taking over the world at the moment and everyone takes in  some sort of media every day whether watching  TV,  reading the newspaper, listening to the radio or even reading a magazine or  on line. Therefore, promoting a  magazine  through  New Media  is very simple; has become a very popular way of advertising/promoting in 2013.

Twitter
Twitter popularity has grown over the last 5 years and has become one of the most commonly used social networking sites with  a range of users from David Cameron to Teens. It's purpose is for you to update on your thoughts and feeling about anything that is relevant at the moment. A magazine account on twitter would be perfect because it allows the followers to know exactly what to expect within the magazine and special offers/money off vouchers could be posted for the followers to use. You could post images of the magazine producers and things that go in with our magazine, by posting photos it can make the followers feel more involved in the magazine. The twitter account name would be put into every issue so it’s easily seen so the account would gain more followers; become more popular.
Facebook
Facebook is extremely popular today. Facebook allows you to create groups and pages for users to like. So, any information posted by the magazine page would go straight onto every person that liked your page’s timeline. Facebook and twitter can become very addictive and time consuming so there is no way that it wouldn't work due to people not seeing the posts. Facebook would make it easier to post photos, possibly some picture that are expected within the magazine and it also it allows other users to post what they think. E.g. commenting, sharing images and posts from my magazine to promote our magazine even more, this will also help our read ship to become wider. Gaining the magazine some free feedback there could be sections such as ‘Who do you want to be interviewed next?’ which  would  help with  getting  my  magazine  to  suit  my  target  audience  really  well.
Smart PhonesThe report shows black circles representing the times you’re currently posting and light-gray circles representing the level of interaction those posts receive. The biggest light-gray circles represent the best times for you to post based on your followers’ engagement. Most people of today own a smart phone  iPhone, Blackberry or an HTC. All of which have access to the internet and allows you to download apps. An app is a great way to promote my magazine. It would be a free app because that way more and more people would download it which would also be available to all smart phones. As I think that is where there is a gap in the market, not all apps are available for all different types of smartphones so it limits who can download it. The app would send a notification to each phone when something very interesting occurs such as a competition; the notification would also remind the user to visit the app and find out what’s to come within the next magazines. Although the app would not have the whole magazine on it, it would definitely have some features and lots of images and information. I will include exciting pull quotes from interviews to wheel the readers into buying the next issue of my magazine.

InstagramThirteen percent of Internet users have Instagram accounts and more than half of the world’s top 100 brands are on Instagram. Your customers and potential customers are there as well. Including hash-tags to do with your magazine and what's involved in the context will help your target audience reach out to you and find out what you're all about. Hashtags
are a way to group ideas, concepts or conversations. They make it easy for people to find others who are posting about topics they’re interested in. By including the appropriate hashtags in your updates, you can effectively reach new people interested in your magazine / company. The key is to use hashtags that not only describe your photos and business, but are also actively searched for and used on Instagram.

Posting at the peak time for your users
As with all social networks, knowing when your community is most likely to engage helps you choose the most effective time to post. IconoSquare has an optimization report that identifies the best times for you to update based on your previous posting history and engagement.engagement metrics

The example above is taken from the Shopify Instagram account. You can see that the best posting times in this particular case are Friday at 9pm and Monday at 9am, surprisingly.

Engaging with competitions for people to repost a particular image to win a tickets free for a gig. This will then be advertising your magazine to their follows what should fit into your target audience. This will gain your magazines account more followers and views.

Location scouting

Before doing my photo-shoot I decided to head up into London to find a perfect unique location that would fit my quirky magazine. I spend a lot of my time up in London so I had a rough idea of some really distinctive locations that would fit in perfectly with my magazine genre. I firstly went up to Shoreditch, whilst looking around I came across loads of street art and mosaic walls. I had never seen something so eye catching and bold before. It was so colourful and something a little different. That is what I wanted my magazine to be ‘different’ it was going to be aimed at a smaller audience and only released monthly so I could afford to print all of my images with a high use of colour on double page spreads. I took a few snaps of my model posing with the street art and different textured wall work. Instantly when I saw the photographs I took I knew this was going to be a great success with my magazine. The photos looked so colourful and crazy; that’s what I wanted and I found it.

Instead of keeping my photo-shoot in the same location I decided I would also take a trip to Camden. I go there regularly so I already knew that it was a funky place to take photographs for my magazine. I actually went into derelict building that was full with graffiti and peoples unwanted rubbish. I came across an old trolley that I decided to use as a prop. It worked really well with my model. I asked Charlotte to get inside the trolley. It made her seem rebellious, fun, young and a confident artist for her music. Camden was also a great location because the whole vibe of placed came out in my photos. We also took photos in the market, I got my model to pose in front of a shop that was selling music records of famous rock artists; it helped reinforce the genre of my magazine and which audience I was particularly aiming my magazine at.

Promotional Methods

Promoting my magazine is one of the best way to make it a huge success if this is done correctly. I have started to think and plan out way to do this the best that will suit my target audience; it has to be appropriate for both genders and also be suitable for a wide age range. The more ways I promote my magazine, the more chance of my readership increasing and becoming more well known.

Bus shelters, Festivals, Social networking and Billboards are all great ways to promote my magazine. When choosing my promotional methods it is important that i choose something what would appeal to my target audience and be suitable for a music magazine.
One of the most popular ways to promote a business or product is on a billboard which will be found in a large city, near shopping centres or busy roads. This will be a very effective way to promote something brand new because they are overly large so they will attract a lot of attention because there and are located in a busy area to gain a lot of attraction. I want to create a very funky, unique and bright billboard as this will stand out from the other well known billboards it will draw the audience into my magazine. The billboard will display important information about my magazine such as the release date, networking sites that we will be using and talking about subscription deals! I will have to keep it in areas where my target audience are mostly likely going to be so i will have my billboard in places Camden, Shoreditch, Oxford St, Westfields shopping centre I decided these where a great choice of location because most of my target audience are out going confident people who enjoy going into central London and browsing shops. Camden is a perfect place because they tend to have a lot of gigs held in the Round house of the Indie/rock genre.

Another promotional method that my magazine will be using is advertisement on the side of a beer box. With a coupon that will give you a half price magazine for the first issue. This is a very effective method as my target audience enjoy drinking in there free time seeing as they are in the social class of A and B they can afford to drink on a regular basic men are associated mainly with beer, but men are 70% of my target audience with females only being 30%. I thought this would be a successful way of promoting my magazine because this beer will be sold in all supermarkets and worldwide. Many people will be able to see this and also with the half price magazine on the first issue this we wheel my audience into buying regularly. By using very vibrant colours and bold overasized fonts it will illustrate to my audience what my magazine is all about.

I personally think the promotional methods chosen for my music magazine will be very effective as they will appear across the country and are most likely to be seen in people's everyday life. When I design these adverts i will include bright colours, oversized bold font, strong pictures that will stand out against the already well known companies and products. It is very important that my advert are a perfect match for my target audience otherwise my magazine will not be a huge sucess.

Equipment

Schools camera
Schools lights
Indesign Software

I have my own Canon SLR so I decided to do my photo shoot myself out of school, from using a high quality camera it makes the photo-shoot much easier as it enabled me to take hundreds of photos at great quality that could simply be look back on so I can select the best images for my magazine. For my photo-shoot outside of school I only used one piece of equipment what was my camera. However I prefer my photo-shoot from outside of school; the images are more unique and fit in my magazines target audience more than my photo-shoot that took place inside of school. However for my photo-shoot inside of school my images came out at a better quality because I used a high professional camera, a white back drop and lights. It took me a few minutes to set my photo-shoot out and to decide where I wanted the lights to be placed to reflect the best lighting and shadow on my model. After uploading my photos from my camera and putting them all together in a folder I singularly went through each individual photo and decided if I thought it was a good image. I had 80 photos to go through in total, so it took some time. I am now creating my magazine on Indesign.

Colour Scheme

After creating both my name and masthead for my music magazine, i decided another key concept for a music magazine is the colour scheme. Magzines will use colour scheme to make there magazine recognizable and attract readers. Throughout my magazine i will use black, white, red and purple. I want my magazine to stand out from the shelve a be a unique indie style. This will appeal strongly to my target audience as they prefer things that are slightly different.

I am most likely to use red and black in my magazine as it connotes darkness and violence what is a big thing involved in my particular genre. Indie music magazines are most stereotypically viewed. For example, in both KERRANG and  NME magazine they use a very similar colour scheme of black, white and red this is a stereotypical colour scheme of indie and rock magazines.
